Mukesh Ambani becomes world's richest man - $63.2 billion net worth

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani today became the richest person in the world, overtaking American software czar Bill Gates, Mexican business tycoon Carlos Slim Helu and famous investment guru Warren Buffett, courtesy the bull run in the stock market.

The benchmark Sensex zoomed past the 20,000-point level during trade on the Bombay Stock Exchange, taking 10 sessions to cover the last 1,000 points, on funds buying in heavy-weight stocks led by Reliance Industries. Sensex had crossed 19,000 mark on October 15. It had crossed 10,000 mark on February 6, 2006 and 15,000 mark on July 6, 2007.

The net worth of Mukesh Ambani rose to $63.2 billion (Rs 2,49,108 crore).

The current rankings of the five richest people in the world with their net worth:

1. Mukesh Ambani ($63.2 billion)

2. Carlos Slim Helu ($62.2993 billion)

3. William (Bill) Gates ($62.29 billion)

4. Warren Buffett ($55.9 billion)

5. Lakshmi Mittal ($50.9 billion)

Warren Buffett, earlier the third richest in the world, also dropped one position with a net worth of about $56 billion.

Ambani's wealth of about Rs 2,49,000 crore includes about Rs 2,10,000 crore from RIL (50.98% stake), Rs 37,500 crore from RPL (37.5%) and Rs 2,100 crore from RIIL (46.23%).

Slim's wealth has been calculated on the basis of his stake in companies like America Movil (30%), Carso Global (82%), Grupo Carso (75%), Inbursa (67%), IDEAL (30%) and Saks Inc (10%).

Earlier last month, US business magazine Forbes had named Gates as the richest American with a net worth of $59 billion, calculated as on August 30. The magazine had said that a movement of $2 in the share price for Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, could "add or subtract $1 billion" from his wealth.

Since August-end, Microsoft's share price has risen by $6.58 (based on yesterday's closing on Nasdaq at $35.03), which results into a gain of $3.29 billion in Gates' wealth based on Forbes assumption.

Earlier on September 26, Ambani had overtaken steel czar Lakshmi Mittal to become the richest Indian in the world.

Mittal currently ranks as the fifth richest in the world with a net worth of $50.9 billion through his 44.79% stake in world's biggest steel maker ArcelorMittal.

Tendulkar to be Test captain of India

Sachin Tendulkar is all set to become Test captain of India for the upcoming cricket series against Pakistan, Australia and South Africa.

Tendulkar has accepted the BCCI's request to take over the reins of the Test team after Rahul Dravid opted out of captaincy on returning from the England tour earlier this year, a top BCCI source said on Saturday.

The national selectors will wait till November 8 before making a formal announcement on Tendulkar's appointment as Test captain. The selectors, who are observing emerging talents in the ongoing Challenger Series, had a very long thought about the Test captaincy, and it seems that they have decided to go for split captaincy.

"It is the prerogative of the national selectors to announce the captain. Most probably Tendulkar's appointment would be announced only in Mohali on November 8 when the selectors meet again to choose the team for the remaining ODIs against Pakistan," the source said.

The source also said selectors were pleased with Mahendra Singh Dhoni's performance as the ODI captain but did not want to put him under extra pressure by giving him the captaincy of the Test team for the high-pressure series against Pakistan, Australia and South Africa.

The first Test against Pakistan begins at the Ferozshah Kotla in New Delhi on November 22. This will be the first time India go in for split captaincy. Tendulkar has also been outspoken about his intentions to phase himself out of the OneDay arena to concentrate on Test cricket, while Dhoni already has the added responsibility of wicketkeeping, besides being three-and-half years old in international cricket. They said Dhoni, while continuing to be the ODI captain, will be the vice-captain for the Test series.

Tendulkar, who succeeded Mohammad Azharuddin in 1996 after the tour of England, has had a mediocre record as Test captain. He had three stints as India captain during which he led the side in 25 Tests, winning four and losing nine. Tendulkar gave up the captaincy after the two-Test series against South Africa in 2000.

Apple Mac OS X Leopard operating system launched

Apple has launched Mac OS X Leopard, the newest version of Apple's operating system, to the general public.

Apple retail employees welcomed Leopard customers with a standing ovation and T-shirts. The first 500 people in line at retails stores were given T-shirts to mark the occasion.

Apple's web site counts more than 300 new features in Leopard, and some of them will make iMacs and MacBooks much more fun to use.

One of the important new feature is 'Time Machine', an automatic back-up system, which has garnered a lot of attention for its simplicity. With an external hard drive, Macs will automatically back everything up. If the computer crashes, the entire system can be restored with Time Machine's record. Owners of Windows machines need to purchase extra software, like Norton's $70 Ghost, to get a similar result and almost nobody does.

Many of Leopard's features meet Apple's user-friendly reputation, including a desktop search system called Spotlight that quickly and thoroughly finds words in documents, e-mails or past visited Web pages based on a few keywords. Windows' slow and limited search function is notorious.

Apple new user-interface innovations include Cover Flow, a feature Windows users might recognize if they've downloaded iTunes or have a video iPod. Cover Flow is a way of paging through documents like a flipbook. The files look like their contents, rather than like icons. Rather than opening up each file, you can breeze through a stack of photos until you recognize the one you're looking for.

With a built-in version of Boot Camp, Apple users can turn Leopard off and switch to Windows when they need a change.

Leopard needs to run on a Mac with at least an 867-MHz PowerPC G4 chip. Leopard will also run on Intel based Macs. Users will additionally need at least 512 MB of memory on their computers and 9GB of available disk space to run OSX Leopard.

Apple is now taking online orders for the software. A single user upgrade pack is priced at $129.00, while a Family Pack good for five installations costs $199. Leopard will also ship pre-installed on the full range of high-end Macs.

Sony Cybershot DSC-T2 8-megapixel 4GB digital camera unveiled

Sony has unveiled its new 8-megapixel Cybershot DSC-T2 digital camera with a huge memory of 4GB, eliminating the need of carrying memory cards. Users can store up to 40,000 VGA-quality photos or 1,000 8-megapixel pictures.

The Cyber-shot DSC-T2 has a new look with a compact silver body; black LCD frame; and a sliding lens cover available in blue, green, pink, white or black colors. Its touch-panel LCD screen replaces small buttons with on-screen icons and a user-friendly interface to make camera operation fast and simple. You can touch the screen to select the subject you want to focus on (shooting mode) and where you want to zoom in (playback mode). It also has technologies such as face detection, optical image stabilization and high sensitivity (ISO 3200).

Using the Picture Motion Browser software, one can view images in chronological order or even can see them by naming a folder according to a particular event like birthdays or Sunday BBQs. Photos can also be moved to the camera’s “favorites” folder for easy access. In “favorites” folder, users can also arrange it in further six sub-folders. The "sharemark" folder can store those photos and videos deemed worthy for sharing beyond the camera onto the web.

The DSC-T2 camera is pre-loaded with Sony PMB Portable software that automatically runs when the device is connected to a compatible PC via the supplied USB cable. Users can also publish their photos and videos directly to photo sharing sites, such as Crackle, Flickr, Photobucket, Shutterfly and YouTube, using this software.

Sony's "smile shutter" function aims to make capturing informal portraits and family snapshots effortless. The function automatically detects and captures a person smiling without the need to press the shutter. If there are several people in the frame, you can select the primary subject for the camera to watch by touching the screen. A sequence of up to six smiling shots can be taken without the need to manually press the shutter.

The DSC-T2 can also be connected to the TV set via HD component cable or an HD cradle (both sold separately), where photos can be viewed in full 1080 HD resolution. Equipped with a built-in slide show function, the camera lets you view photos, complete with dynamic transitions choreographed to your choice of programmed music clips or by adding your own.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2 digital camera will be available in December for about $350 (approx Rs. 13,870).

Salman Khan - the new Tarzan!

Salman has just signed on a film called Tarzan, set in the jungles. Salman will sport a new look for the film, which will go on the floors next year.

"I was always fascinated by Tarzan stories and I am glad that I have got a chance to do the film," Salman told reporters in Mumbai. "I want to do the film for children," the actor said. "I have found out that I have a huge fan following among kids, and I want to dedicate this film to them." said Salman.

"I will get a new hairstyle for this film. It will be as popular as my hairstyle in Tere Naam. I want a different kind of look that will become a style statement," Salman added.

Asked if he was prepared to stay in a jungle, Salman exclaimed, "Of course! Tarzan lived in a jungle with wild animals. You will see that element in my film too. I only hope animal activists don't come after my life before the film begins!" he laughed.

Does he see a market for such kinds of movies? "If (actor) Hemant Birje could make Tarzan a hit film 20 years ago, then I am sure I too can make it."

It seems that Salman has been inspired by Aamir Khan and his new children's film, Taare Zameen Par. Salman's film will be directed by Anees Bazmee who directed No Entry, one of Salman's biggest hits.

ACi to launch Rs. 15,000 Laptops in India

Allied Computers International (Asia) Ltd (ACi) is planning to launch a cheaper compact laptop that will cost around Rs. 15,000.

ACi had earlier launched a laptop for just Rs. 19,999. In 2004, they launched exceptionally low-priced laptop that retailed for Rs. 29,999 in the country. The lower price point was possible due to the use of aluminum body instead of fiber or plastic.

The company is planning to set up a manufacturing unit exclusively for laptops in Thane district, adjacent to Mumbai. It is also planning to open its own showrooms all over India and enter into tie-ups with supermarkets or malls and retail showroom franchisees.

ACi’s chairman-cum-managing director Hirji Patel, said “We plan to increase our production from the existing 10,000 laptops to 100,000 per year. As a first step towards achieving this, we hope to garner Rs.60 million through the IPO which opened Friday. Now, the hostility to laptops in the Indian market has disappeared, customers are choosing a laptop over a PC since the price barrier between them has been erased.”

In the first three quarters of 2006 ACi had captured 40 percent of the estimated total market of 250,000 laptops from the small and medium enterprises (SME) segment in India.

The low cost laptop from ACi is expected to be available by mid-2008.

Nokia launches N810 Internet Tablet

Nokia has launched a new version of its Linux-based Internet tablet. The N810 is smaller, heavier, and faster than the older N800.

Its new features include a slide-out hardware QWERTY thumb keyboard, GPS receiver, FM transmitter (for in-car listening), and a light-sensing screen dimmer. The Nokia N810 Internet Tablet is intended for heavy users of Web sites, such as Google, Skype, Facebook and Flickr. It connects to Wi-Fi hot spots or Bluetooth connections, instead of cellular networks, as cell phones do.

The N810 is the first of Nokia's Internet tablets to integrate a GPS receiver. The N810's auto-dimming screen could help improve readability in environments such as cars, with variable ambient light conditions. The N810 has built-in maps and satellite navigation for getting directions, a high-resolution camera, instant messaging, and a 10GB memory card that stores up to 7,500 songs.

The N810 is also the first of Nokia's Linux-based tablets to feature a full Mozilla-based browser which allows users to enjoy the most sophisticated "Web 2.0" social networking sites.

Nokia has worked with Google to incorporate Google Talk instant messaging features that allow users to know when other friends using Google Gmail are online. Users can also choose Skype or other Internet-calling applications. The N810's browser has a Flash 9 plugin, and supports AJAX, something no other mobile device can do. Opera is no longer present on the device. It also provides support for Windows Media codecs, enabling users to access more of the Internet's multimedia offerings.

However the promised WiMax support is missing in the new Nokia N810, although WiMax-enabled N-series devices are likely to be distributed as it rolls out service areas next year.

Inside Toyota's Factory

Here are some pictures of the production of cars inside Toyota's Japanese plant.

Lexus cars have been built since the debut of the LS400 sedan in 1989.

Toyota Lexus engine plant is the only one in the world where workers must pass through an air shower to remove dust before starting work on the factory floor.

To demonstrate a smooth-running engine, a glass of a mysterious pink liquid is placed under the open hood. When the engine begins running, the liquid wobbles slightly before settling.

At this plant, 200 Lexus experts are responsible for checking 4,000 quality items.

A driver prepares to move a new Lexus LS600h off the production line. At this plant, a new Lexus rolls off the line 675 times every day, or once every 87 seconds.

After rolling off the production line, engineers make yet more checks. This Lexus worker is checking the clearance gap between the hood and the front wing using a digital calibrator.

A gloved Lexus test driver takes a new LS600h for a test drive. Testing includes a total of 55 checks, such as monitoring noise levels while driving on cobbles at 20 mph. Drivers also conduct braking and cruise-control tests.

Lexus workers drop into the dojo, a kind of training camp for the body and mind, to polish up on skills and fitness. Here, a gloved worker is caressing a panel for imperfections in the paintwork; flaws almost invisible to the human eye.

Another Lexus engineer is being put through his paces on screwing in bolts to just the right level of tightness using an electric screwdriver. To aid learning, a laptop computer and speaker system replays the sounds of a perfectly tightened bolt.

To maintain product quality, workers are encouraged to stay in trim. Here, a Lexus employee exercises his hands and wrists by squeezing golf balls. Workers also do sit-ups and use cycling machines to stay in shape.

To ensure that parts are fitted to the highest levels of accuracy, Lexus workers practice fitting blocks to a board at various angles. Through practice, accuracy and speed are improved.

The new LS600hL hybrid car features a 5-litre hybrid engine system, all-wheel drive, and rear seats with a massage system.

Like sand dunes waving across a vast desert, folds of rock seem to ripple over the floor of the Western Candor Chasma, a major canyon in Mars's Valles Marineris rift system.

The patterns are created by multiple layers of light-colored rocks that once shifted and folded along Martian faults and are now being exposed by erosion. Dark blue dunes rise above the coppery surface of Wirtz Crater, a possible landing site for NASA's new Mars Science Laboratory, which is set to launch in 2009.

Might look like an aerial view of waves crashing on a distant shore. But this scene, recently captured by NASA's HiRISE camera, is actually part of the largest sedimentary fan inside Mars's 96-mile-wide (154-kilometer-wide) Holden Crater.

Gullies across the Martian surface resemble Earthly mountain ranges in this high-resolution color image from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE camera.

Sapphire-hued dunes and hills dot the inside of a crater in the Western Arabia Terra region of northern Mars—thought to be some of the oldest terrain on the red planet. The crater is among 30 possible landing sites for a new Mars rover that were imaged in color by NASA's orbiting HiRISE camera.

Rani Mukherjee to wed Aditya Chopra on Feb 10?

Here's a new twist to the Rani Mukherjee and Aditya Chopra love story. After their secret engagement story which hit the headlines a couple of months back, it’s time now for the real story to unfold.

The secret lovers are finally ready to take the plunge and exchange wedding vows and heading towards a grand hush hush plan to get married early next year. The day that’s been fixed is Feb 10, 2008 and the venue Jodhpur’s most expensive and prestigious luxury hotel the Umaid Bhawan.

It’s one of the most expensive place in India, but Aditya and Rani thinks it’s the perfect place to get away from the prying eyes of Mumbai’s media. They have booked the entire palace way in advance and everything is done in a hushed manner. Only a few close friends know about it. Rani’s family knows about it, but we are not sure about Aditya’s family.

The hiccup, however, is that Aditya Chopra apparently hasn't yet divorced his wife Payal. Nevertheless, the divorce is sure to come through before February. It was earlier known that Yash Chopra was against the divorce of Aditya and Payal. It seems that all the problems about Rani's marriage with Aditya have been solved.

A local distributor of Rajasthan who did not wish to be named confirmed the news. “Yes, Umeed Bhawan has been booked for their Shaadi, and we are sure lots of people from Bollywood will be coming here for the wedding,” he says.

Rani is currently shooting for a yet untitled Yash Raj movie. It is being directed by Kunal Kohli and also stars Amisha Patel and Saif Ali Khan. The shoot ends in December. Rani Mukherjee and Aditya Chopra have not officially confirmed this matter as yet.

Airtel launches 8 Mbps broadband in India

Airtel has launched an 8 Mbps broadband service, thus becoming the first service provider in the country to offer such high speed broadband service.

Airtel broadband customers can now browse multiple windows and at the same time, download heavy files, view streaming video, enjoy online gaming, chat, email and other applications. At 8 mbps, the Airtel broadband network will be IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) ready.

Currently the speeds on offer, range from 256 KBps to 4Mbps. With the new speed offering, Airtel has pioneered a revolution in internet experience. Customers will no longer have to wait for a video to get buffered while watching streaming videos. A 5 MB music file can be downloaded in five seconds, compared to 160 seconds on a 256 kbps connection.

Since most users will not require internet access at very high speeds all the time, Airtel plans to introduce 8 mbps broadband as an “on-demand” access for those using lower speeds. This model is expected to be finalised in a fortnight. Likened to “opening tap for some duration,” this feature will help users switch on 8 mbps for a movie download, for instance, before switching back to slower speeds.

Airtel's 8 Mbps broadband service will initially be available in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Kolkata, Delhi and the NCR, and a subsequent roll out in Mumbai and Hyderabad in a few weeks. Tariff plans and product offerings are being worked out.

Google SMS launched in India

Google has introduced the Google SMS service for Indian mobile users. Through this beta offering, users can avail of the Google Search tool without the need of a computer or an internet enabled phone.

Services on offer include Local Search, Weather, Glossary, Movies, Q&A, Translation, Web Snippets, Calculator and Currency Conversion.

Through the ‘Google SMS’ mobile messaging service, users can get business listings and movie show timings, just by sending a text message to the shortcode, which is 54664, from their mobile phones.

This service can even provide local information such as movie timings, restaurants, local hospitals and taxi services etc. Searching through the Google SMS service is simple. For e.g., if users wants information about pizzerias in Andheri West, user can type “pizza andheri west mumbai” and send a SMS to 54664. Google will reply with the list of pizza restaurants in that area.

The Google SMS service is currently available to Airtel, Aircel, BPL, BSNL and Reliance subscribers located at Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai. Users will have to pay premium messaging rates while using the service.

Rare amazing Dolphin birth pictures

It is one of the rarest and most magical sights in the natural world. A bottlenose dolphin goes into labour . . . then a calf emerges, tail first. Mother guides baby gently to the surface, where they swim together for the first time.

Very few dolphin births have been captured on film in such astonishing detail. This one was recorded at a wildlife park pool in Rimini, Italy, where the photographer was in exactly the right place at the right time.

The dolphin is born tail first

In a cloud of blood the dolphin calf is free.

Happily swimming side by side with its mother the baby dolphin is instantly at home in the sea.

"To take good pictures is not easy," said the photographer who has been taking photos of dolphins for 14 years. "Most births happen during the night when the light is very poor. "Sometimes dolphins prefer to stay far away from windows. Sometimes water quality is poor. "This time I was extremely lucky. It was daytime first of all. There were three photographers, one at each of the three underwater windows - and I was at the right one! "The others couldn't even see the event."

Sonam Kapoor unveils Dove Hair Gallery

Sonam Kapoor, unveiled the 'Dove Beautiful Hair Gallery' in a glittering ceremony.

A one-of-its-kind initiative by Dove Haircare, which marks the culmination of their 'Real Women Real Beauty' campaign, began with an online survey to find out what women the world over felt about their hair.

Sonam was invited as the guest of honor for the launch of Dove hair care products in association with Femina at Salt Water Grill, Charni Road, Mumbai.

Sonam, the 22-year-old daughter of Anil Kapoor, who will make her debut in Bollywood on November 8 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya, was a picture of pristine beauty and sartorial splendor, attired in a red Banarsi silk suit with heavy zari work.

Sonam's interaction with the press was very cordial and had an endearing simplicity.

"Please watch our film and encourage Ranbir and me. It's our first film together," she said.

But she was humorous, taking a dig at her father, in the context of the products being launched, she quipped, "You have to see my father. He has so much hair."

Nissan Pivo 2 Concept Swiveling Electric Car

Nissan's ball-shaped electric vehicle can squeeze into tight spots without backing up because its wheels turn 90 degrees and the cabin part of the car can rotate in a complete circle.

The Pivo 2, being shown at the Tokyo auto show later this month, is a three-seat ecological commuter car that's fully working but too expensive to go on commercial sale yet, according to Nissan Motor Co. officials.

In a demonstration Friday, the concept car rolled up next to a tiny parking space, turned its wheels at an angle, then scooted into the space without the back-and-forth jockeying that most cars would need.

The top part of the car — the name is inspired by the word "pivot" — swivels 360 degrees, independent of the wheels, so drivers can turn to face whichever direction they want.

Nissan designers added robotics functions to the Pivo 2, an upgrade of a car shown a couple of years ago, so that a bobbing mechanical head near the steering wheel speaks in a cute electronic voice to provide companionship.

The three-seat car is equipped with safety systems such as Around View Monitor (AVM), Distance Control Assist System (DCAS) and also a Robotic Agent that uses facial monitoring technology to interact with the driver.

Nissan claims the robot can detect the driver's mood by analyzing changes in facial expressions picked up by its digital-camera eyes and using a microphone that picks up the driver's voice to detect volume and speaking speed.

The robotic head says preprogrammed phrases to deal with various emotions, such as, "Relax, don't worry," if the driver seems upset.

"We want people to feel how cars can be so much fun," said Shiro Nakamura, Nissan's head designer.

Pivo 2 can be recharged by plugging a cable into a regular home socket and travels 125 kilometers (78 miles) on a single charge, according to Nissan.

The LG Voyager features provide support for its high-speed EV-DO 3G network and includes a HTML Web browser, a two-megapixel camera and Bluetooth wireless headphone capability. The music player on the LG Voyager supports MP3, WMA and unprotected ACC music files. Customers can add as much as 8 GB of storage with SD flash memory, the same capacity of the iPhone or an iPod Nano music player.

The Shortcut Menu icons that appear on the Voyager's touch screen and another set of icons at the bottom of the screen are similar to the iPhone.

The LG Voyager is expected to cost less than the $399 iPhone when it goes on sale in stores by the end of November 2007.

Sony unveils world's first 11-inch OLED TV

Sony has unveiled the world's first OLED (organic light-emitting diode) TV.

Sony's XEL-1 OLED TV offers an 11-inch OLED screen that is an incredible 3 mm thick (about the same as three credit cards) and will go on sale in December. The screen is thinner than a LCD or Plasma TV set because no backlight is required. The XEL-1 has a resolution of just 960 pixels by 540 pixels, but it will accept up to a 1080p video image.

The XEL-1 has a thin, widescreen display mounted on a metal arm attached to a base. The base contains all of the electronics required for the television, and has an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) port, a built-in satellite tuner, as well as a USB port and an Ethernet connection.

OLED materials, which are carbon-based, emit light on their own when an electric current is applied. OLED TV's offer other advantages over LCD and Plasma TV technology, including wider viewing angles, faster response time, and better contrast and colors. However, the technology is difficult to manufacture and the OLED material degrades over time.

Sony XEL-1 has a viewing life of 30,000 hours, which allows a user to watch eight hours of television each day for 10 years.

Prices for LCD and plasma display TVs are falling by 25-30 per cent each year because of competition among Asian rivals, pushing consumer electronics groups to develop technology that can be used in next-generation TVs. The most popular HDTVs today are in the 37- to 42-inch range, with LCD screens the clear market leader. Sony has said it plans to build bigger OLED screens.

Specifications:
Weighs 2 kgs
Measures 287 × 140 × 253mm
Contrast ratio 1,000,000:1
960 x 450 resolution
USB
Ethernet
HDMI input terminal
45W power consumption
2 x 1W speakers
/BS/110 CS digital tuner

The television goes on sale in Japan on Dec. 1, and will cost $1,700. Currently, there are no plans to sell the television outside Japan, as Sony plans to manufacture just 2,000 sets each month.
