Hercules - World's Largest Liger

Hercules the Liger stands at over ten feet tall. The Liger is a hybrid cross between a male lion and a female tiger. (Click to enlarge images)

Hercules lives at the TIGERS animal sanctuary in Miami, Florida. He is three years old, stands 10 feet tall on his hind legs, and weighs about 1,000 lbs. (At maturity he is expected to reach 12 feet in length and weight about 1,250 lbs.) He eats about 20 lbs. of meat (beef or chicken) per day, and he can consume up to 100 lbs of food in one sitting.

He is the accidental result of two enormous big cats living close together at the Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species, in Miami, Florida, and already dwarfs both his parents.

"Ligers are not something we planned on having," said institute owner Dr Bhagavan Antle. "We have lions and tigers living together in large enclosures and at first we had no idea how well one of the lion boys was getting along with a tiger girl, then lo and behold we had a liger."

A liger resembles a lion with diffused stripes. They are the largest cats in the world, although the Siberian Tiger is the largest "pure" taxon. Ligers and tigers enjoy swimming, whereas lions do not. A similar hybrid, the offspring of a male tiger and a female lion is called a tigon.

Rare reports have been made of tigresses mating with lions in the wild. Such mating may have occurred when, in uncommon circumstances, tigers were forced into ranges inhabited by the Asiatic Lion. However, since the present-day ranges of wild lions and tigers no longer overlap, it is generally held that such a combination of species would occur very rarely.

2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

The 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, is powered by a supercharged LS9 6.2L small-block engine capable of producing at least 620 horsepower and approximately 595 lb.-ft. of torque. (Click to enlarge high-resolution images)

It has a positive-displacement Roots-type supercharger with a new, four-lobe rotor design plus an integrated charge cooling system that reduces inlet air temperature for increased performance.

The ZR1 has huge carbon-ceramic, drilled disc brake rotors. They're so big and are required to be so powerful they're using the same 15-inch-diameter discs found on the front of a Ferrari 599. Except on the ZR1, they go on the 20" tires in the rear. In the front, they'll be getting even larger 15.5-inch-diameter rotors.

(Video) Pregnant Man

Thomas Beatie, a married man who used to be a woman, says that he is pregnant and will give birth to a baby girl in July.

“How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible,” wrote Thomas Beatie, 34, from the Pacific North West of the United States, in the latest issue of the gay magazine The Advocate.

“Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am.”

Mr Beatie was born female, named Tracy Lagondino, but had gender reassignment surgery and is now legally male and married to a woman.

He decided to carry a baby for his wife, Nancy, because she had a hysterectomy years ago. He was able to get pregnant because he kept his female organs when he switched genders.

“Sterilisation is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights,” he writes. “Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire but a human desire.” The couple, who have been together for ten years, run a custom screenprinting business in Bend, Oregon, where neighbours do not know that Mr Beatie was once a woman.

“Our desire to work hard, buy our first home and start a family was nothing out of the ordinary. That is, until we decided that I would carry our child,” he wrote.

Before becoming pregnant, Mr Beatie stopped the testosterone injections he was receiving as part of his gender reassignment. “It had been roughly eight years since I had my last menstrual cycle so this wasn’t a decision that I took lightly. My body regulated itself after about four months and I didn’t have to take any exogenous oestrogen, progesterone or fertility drugs to aid my pregnancy,” he wrote.

The couple bought donor vials from a cryogenic sperm bank and, facing resistance and prejudice from doctors, resorted to home insemination.

“Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Healthcare professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognise Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender,” he said.

This is Mr Beatie's second pregnancy. The first was an ectopic pregnancy with triplets.

"It was a life-threatening event that required surgical intervention, resulting in the loss of all embryos and my right fallopian tube," he said.

"When my brother found out about my loss, he said, 'It’s a good thing that happened. Who knows what kind of monster it would have been'.”

The second pregnancy resulted in a baby girl who is due to be born on July 3. “I will be my daughter’s father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family,” he wrote.

Mr Beatie would not be the first transgender man to give birth, according to Lisa Masterson, an obstetrician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.

“A transgender man can be pregnant because he has the same organs as a woman,” Dr Masterson said on the ABC Good Morning America show.

Dr Masterson said, however, that transgendered men face special health risks resulting from their sex change. “It’s really important that he doesn’t take any testosterone early on in the pregnancy and later on,” she said. “That can cause male-type characteristics in the female baby.”

Some of the Beaties’ neighbours in Bend voiced scepticism about the pregnancy claim. One resident, Josh Love, told ABC: “I couldn’t say that he looks pregnant. I can stick my stomach out and almost make it look like that. I think it’s kind of bizarre. I don’t know if I believe it or not.”

The Advocate said it had confirmed the story with Mr Beatie’s doctor.

E-cigarette

An e-cigarette (or e-cig) is an electronic version of a cigarette. It feels like a cigarette, looks like a cigarette but it isn't bad for your health.

A Chinese company marketing the world's first "electronic" cigarette hopes to double sales this year as it expands overseas and as some of China's legions of smokers try to quit. It is developed in China by Hon Lik of Ruyan Holdings, and the technology is patent pending worldwide.

Golden Dragon Group Ltd's Ruyan cigarettes are battery-powered, cigarette-shaped devices that deliver nicotine to inhalers in a bid to emulate actual smoking.

The left part (white) is the battery, the middle part (white with small hole) is the atomizer and the right part (brown) is the mouthpiece and cartridge.

The device takes the form of a tiny rod which is slightly longer than a normal cigarette. The mouthpiece of the device contains a replaceable cartridge filled with liquid. The main substances contained in the liquid are nicotine and propylene glycol.

When the user inhales through the device, the air flow is detected by a sensor. A microprocessor then activates an atomizer which injects tiny droplets of the liquid into the flowing air. This produces a vapor mist which is inhaled by the user. The addition of propylene glycol to the liquid makes the mist better resemble normal cigarette smoke. The microprocessor also activates an orange LED at the tip to simulate real smoking.

E-cigarettes generally use a rechargeable battery as a power source. Battery life varies between devices, with some lasting a day between charges, and others lasting a week.

"The nicotine is delivered to the lungs within 7 to 10 seconds," said Scott Fraser, Vice President of SBT Co. Ltd., the Beijing-based firm that first developed the electronic cigarette technology in 2003 and which is now controlled by Golden Dragon.

"It feels like a cigarette, looks like a cigarette, it even emits vapor. In many ways, it is like an actual smoking experience, and that's what makes us different," he told Reuters.

The cigarettes sell for around 1,600 yuan ($208) apiece and are already available in China, Israel, Turkey, and a number of European countries, but not yet the United States.

Golden Dragon's competitors include global giants Pfizer and Novartis AG, which sell more familiar nicotine replacement products such as chewing gum, patches, and inhalers.

But Golden Dragon's financial results show it might be onto a good thing. Sales more than doubled to HK$286.1 million in 2006, after surging more than ten-fold to HK$135.6 million in 2005, a year after the technology was perfected.

China -- home to 400 million smokers and a roughly $160 billion dollar tobacco industry -- accounts for 65 percent of Ruyan sales. The firm estimates around 10 percent of China's smokers are attempting to quit, and averaging a 2 percent success rate.

Swimming with Crocodiles

Swimming with hungry crocodiles is not most people's idea of fun but, for 28-year-old hot babe Kerry Shaw, it was a dream come true. (Click to enlarge images)

In Oudtshoom, South Africa, anyone can swim with these predator crocodiles without being frightened. It isn't expensive at all, as for just, $30, anyone can wear his/her swimming trunks or bikini and snorkeling gear and enjoy swimming in a reinforced steel cage with killer crocodiles, but for only ten minutes. But there is a minimum age of 12 and children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult during the dive.

Kerry who is also a South African media executive said, "I was a little nervous but very excited to get into the water," "It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a chance I didn't want to miss out on", admitting that she checked the cage door was locked before going into the pool.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

The new 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is based on the same rear-wheel-drive platform as the Genesis sedan. It was previewed with a concept version late last year, and later to a marketing study group in pre-production form.

The first of Hyundai’s new “premium” cars, it is expected to hit the market in Spring 2009, making it a 2010 model.

The base car will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with up-level models being propelled by a 3.8L V6. Hyundai is claiming that the production Genesis Coupe is the most affordable 300+ horsepower car on the market. The final horsepower ratings will be in the 310 to 320 range. The car has a redline of 6,500 rpm.

The car's center stack features a large LCD screen, while the gauge cluster has a futuristic, two-pod design. The Genesis Coupe will have a 2+2 setup, with cup holders separating the rear buckets. Despite only having two doors, rear seat legroom looks surprisingly ample.

Every 2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe should come with antilock disc brakes, traction control, and curtain side airbags. The four-cylinder base model will probably roll on standard 17-inch wheels. The V6 version is likely to come with 18s, plus a limited-slip differential and maybe stability control. Options for both models should include a navigation system, an upscale leather interior, and perhaps 19-inch wheels with low-profile performance tires.

A baby girl was born with two faces and four eyes in Gautam Budh Nagar in the suburbs of Delhi.

Born to Vinod Singh and Sushma at Saifai Hospital in Dadri, the girl is being worshipped as a reincarnated god. People in her rural village have been singing and dancing — offering money and asking for her blessings.

The parents are hoping the government will help with medical treatments needed for their baby girl in the future.

Doctor attending the baby said she is otherwise healthy.

"A patient was admitted to our hospital around 0600 hrs IST in the morning. An unusual girl child was delivered normally with two faces and four eyes. Both mother and the child are healthy and doing fine," Dr Aas Mohammad of Saifai Hospital said.

Logitech G51 Gaming Speakers Surround Sound

Logitech has introduced the G51 Surround Sound Speaker System, a 5.1 speaker system which features 360-dgree surround sound with dual Matrix modes.

The Logitech G51 Surround Sound system makes 360-degree surround sound available with or without a multi-channel audio source. The dual Matrix technology creates a 5.1 surround sound experience from any common two-channel stereo source. This technology splits the audio signal into six channels of sound without degrading the audio quality. So, even if a game doesn’t provide six-channel audio, surround sound will still be possible. First person shooter gamers will also be able to hear their enemies creeping up from behind and if they are shot at, they’ll know exactly which direction the bullets have come from.

It offers two Matrix modes- gaming and music. The former mode boost the rear speakers and subwoofer offering an intense gaming experience, while the ported down-firing subwoofer makes in-game explosions sound more explosive. Music Matrix mode enhances stereo music, delivering a natural surround sound through all five satellite speakers.

The Logitech G51 Surround Sound Speakers are equipped with an improved control pod that includes both headphone and microphone jacks. This control pod also provides precision dual mute controls which allows gamers to easily mute the game’s audio or mute only the microphone, or both. The pod has silicon feet, which allows gamers to play in peace without worrying if it shifts during intense hours of gameplay.

The G51 speakers feature Frequency Directed Dual Driver (FDD2) technology, which produces a uniform sound field by housing two drivers in each satellite. FDD2 overcomes high-frequency overlap that leads to uneven sound -- a major barrier to dual driver speakers in the past. The result is uniform, intense sound from any place in the room. And with laser-tuned audio drivers, the speakers provide clear audio with less distortion.

Logitech has also provided the ability to modify the G51 speakers. This allows gamers to create their own artwork for the four left and right satellites. Gamers can also rotate the satellite stands to mount them on a wall, or clip the center channel to the top of an LCD flat-panel monitor.

Tongues started wagging when Irfan was found missing as Team India was felicitated in New Delhi two days ago. BCCI officials said he had stayed back in Australia with permission of the board to attend to some personal matter. Sources now say he may have stayed back to spend some time with Shivangi.

Cricket fans in Vadodara had noticed a year ago that the two were quite cosy. She also left the stadium after the Ranji tie along with Yusuf, Irfan’s elder brother, leading to some speculation.

Irfan’s sister Shagufta, however, told the media onSaturday, "Irfan has stayed back in Australia to visit one of our relatives who is ill. He will return to India in next few days."

Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHybrid - Li-ion powered car

The Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHybrid will be the first production hybrid vehicle in the world to use a lithium ion battery (yes, the same type of batteries which are used in mobiles). The S400 uses Mercedes 3.5L V-6 petrol engine combined with the 15kW electric motor/generator.

Most current production hybrid electric vehicles use nickel metal hydride batteries. The lithium-ion battery is smaller, with better performance, but in the past has been plagued by overheating. Mercedes appears to have solved that issue by integrating the battery pack into the vehicle's climate control system, which enables it to maintain battery operating temperatures between 59 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

The main advantages offered by the newly developed lithium-ion battery are its very compact dimensions and its far superior performance compared to conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries. The weight/power ratio of the entire battery is 1,900 watts per liter (W/L). The battery has a high ampere-hour efficiency, long service life, and great reliability, even at very low temperatures. Its high level of safety is the equal of that provided by today's auto batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are ideally suited for use in hybrid vehicles to help reducing fuel consumption and thus also CO2 emissions. At the same time, the Daimler engineers are investigating to what degree this technology can be applied to other vehicle concepts, such as electric and fuel cell-powered cars.

The S400 BlueHybrid consumes only 7.9 liters of gasoline per 100 km (i.e. 12.6 kmpl) in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) which combines city and highway driving. This results in very low CO2 emissions of only 190 grams per kilometer, a very low value for this vehicle class and power class, making the S400 BlueHybrid the world's most economical luxury sedan - unrivaled by any gasoline, diesel, or hybrid drive system offered by any competitor. S400 BlueHybrid drivers will still enjoy impressive performance: combined with the hybrid module, the maximum output is 299 hp, and the corresponding maximum torque is 375 Nm. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

The S400 BlueHybrid will be launching in calendar 2009 in both North America and Europe.

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 released

Microsoft has released its next-generation Web browser, Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1, which it says will adhere to the same standards as competitors' browsers such as Mozilla's Firefox, Apple's Safari and others.

The new version of the browser will support industry-standard versions of the code that tells browsers what Web pages should look like by default.

The two standout features are something called “Activities” and another known as “WebSlices.” Activities are, according to the site, “contextual services to quickly access a service from any webpage.” The example image shows a contextual menu with options to post something to Digg, share on Facebook, look up on Dictionary.com and more. Some of the options are for Microsoft web properties like Live Spaces and Live Hotmail, but there are a number of third-party options in what seems to be the default configuration.

WebSlices are another nice looking feature. They work somewhat like Apple’s customizable Dashboard clippings, except in this case the clipping lives in the browser. If there’s a part of a page you’d like to track, but you don’t care about the rest — a weather widget for example — the WebSlice would allow you to bookmark just that element. IE 8 will then track changes to that portion of the page, alerting you when new info is available.

Microsoft unveiled other features in the new browser that may appeal more to average Web users. For example, right-clicking on a Web page will give people more "to-do" options than they'd see today. Users will be able to "Send to Facebook," "Map with Live Search" or "Define with Dictionary.com" with a quick click. There is also automatic crash recovery and better phishing protection.

Lethal Stingray

Stingrays (Dasyatidae) is a family of rays, cartilaginous marine fishes, related to skates and sharks. (Click to enlarge images)

Dasyatids are common in tropical coastal waters throughout the world, and there are fresh water species in Asia, Africa, and Florida . The "typical" freshwaters rays in South America, while superficially similar to stingrays, are members of another family, Potamotrygonidae.

Dasyatids swim with a flapping motion, propelled by motion of their large pectoral fins (commonly mistaken as "wings"). Their stinger is a razor-sharp, barbed, or serrated cartilaginous spine which grows from the ray's whip-like tail (like a fingernail), and can grow as long as 37 cm (about 14.6 inches). On the underside of the spine are two grooves containing venom-secreting glandular tissue. The entire spine is covered with a thin layer of skin called the integumentary sheath, in which venom is concentrated. This gives them their common name of stingrays (a compound of "sting" and "ray"), but the name can also be used to refer to any poisonous ray. Divers often refer to them as "Sea Devils".

Some adult rays may be no larger than a human palm, while other species, like the short-tail stingray, may have a body of six feet in diameter, and an overall length, including their tail, of fourteen feet. Stingrays may also be called the whip-tailed rays though this usage is much less common. A group or collection of stingrays is commonly referred to as a "fever" of stingrays.

Dasyatids generally do not attack aggressively or even actively defend themselves. When threatened, their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is whipped up. Surfers or those who enter waters with large populations of stingrays have learned to slide their feet through the sand rather than stepping, as the rays are able to detect this and swim away. This attack is normally ineffective against their main predator, sharks.

Humans are usually stung in the foot region (depending on the size of the stingray); it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung by brushing against the stinger. Humans who harass stingrays have been known to be stung elsewhere, sometimes leading to fatalities.

Stingrays are usually very docile creatures. The customary reaction of the stingray is to immediately flee the vicinity of a disturbance. Nevertheless, certain larger species are located in waters where they are easily excitable due to possible attacks from feeding sharks and should be approached with caution, as the stingray's defensive reflex and effort to flee may result in human contact with the stinger, resulting in serious injury or even (though rarely) death.

Dasyatids are not normally visible to swimmers, but divers and snorkelers may find them in shallow sandy waters, more so when the water is unseasonably warm.
