Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 now available

Mozilla has announced the availability of Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 for download. This development will deliver new features to Firefox users along with easier, faster and secured internet access.

Not only its features but also the look of the browser has been changed. Firefox will now be available in a new interface, based on user feedback.

Some of the features introduced in Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 are:
1. Fixes and improvements to platform features to improve security, web compatibility and stability.
2. Continued performance improvements
3. Speed, memory use and reliability are some of the improved attributes. Applications like Google Mail and Zoho Office are claimed to run at a double speed of what Firefox 2 ran at. Moreover, Mozilla says that a new memory allocator reduces fragmentation, hundreds of leaks have been fixed and caching strategies have been tuned.
4. The reliability of the browser is increased, thanks to a transactionally secure database format. Bookmarks, history, cookies and preferences are now stored in this transactionally secure database format, which will prevent data loss even if the system crashes. Some of the security improvements featured in Firefox 3 include malware protection, a new web forgery protection page, new SSL error pages, secure add-on updates and version checks, better antivirus integration when it comes to downloads, and compatibility with Vista parental controls.

Some features making the browser easier to use include improved password management, easier add-on installation, a new download manager, support for full page zoom, a prompt to save tabs on exit, better plugin management and better integration with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.

Firefox 3 will also feature improved personalization through a smart bookmarks folder which includes access to more frequently visited pages and a place organizer which enables users to view, organize and search through their bookmarks, tags and browsing history. Another improvement allows users to utilize their webmail provider to handle mailto: links rather than being forced to use desktop applications to send email.

The Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 is available in more than 45 languages. A final release is still expected to come in June.

Werewolf Boy - India

Prithviraj Patil who is known as the ‘Werewolf Boy’ due to hair growth all over his face and body, suffers from a rare genetic condition called hypertrichosis (Werewolf Syndrome) since birth. (Click to enlarge images)

Prithviraj Patil, the son of a well-to-do farmer in Sangalwadi near Sangli, Maharashtra is otherwise a healthy normal child. The facial hair, which is up to three-inches (8 cm) long may look awful, but it does not induce any itch or rash on the skin and it is not accompanied by any odor or skin disorder.

"Hairy nevus, where a person has patches of excess hair growth or hirsutism, is not uncommon. But hair persisting all over the body is very rare", said plastic surgeon Vinay Saoji. He is believed to be one of only 50 people in the world with this condition.

Prithviraj’s family tried all sorts of treatment but to no avail. Then they appealed to doctors to provide a permanent cure. The hair grows back even after laser treatment and this has baffled doctors. Prithviraj lives in his own world as he often gets bullied and laughed at a lot at first, but soon people came to accept him.

Such traits, reminding us of real or supposed evolutionary lost characteristics are called atavisms. They usually appear because genes for previously existing phenotypical traits are not discarded from the genome, but often preserved and just inhibited by our DNA. Even if these genes are not expressed, a mutation can reactivate them.

Samsung 82” 2160p QuadHD LCD TV

Samsung has unveiled the industry's first 82” QuadHD LCD TV that offers four times the resolution of today’s 1080p high definition TVs.

The 82” prototype has an ultra-definition (3,840 by 2,160 pixels) resolution at a 120Hz refresh rate. A red/green/blue LED backlight has been added to raise true color saturation to 150%, based on the NISC standard of 100 percent.

Quad HDTVs have been available before, but were exclusively marketed to markets that have a need for high resolution image display – such as the oil and gas industries. For example, Westinghouse has been offering 2160p TVs with sizes up to 52”. The Westinghouse Quad HDTV is not sold on the open market, but costs around $40,000 currently.

There is no information available about the price of Samsung's 82" QuadHD TV.

Fastest man on no legs - Oscar Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius is a South African Paralympic runner. Known as the "Blade Runner" and "the fastest man on no legs", Pistorius is the double amputee world record holder in the 100, 200 and 400 metres events and runs with the aid of Cheetah Flex-Foot carbon fibre transtibial artificial limbs by Ossur. (Click to enlarge images)

Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius was born to Henke and Sheila Pistorius on 22 November 1986 in Sandton, Gauteng Province, with congenital absence of the fibula in both legs. When he was 11 months old, his legs were amputated halfway between his knees and ankles.

In 2007 Pistorius took part in his first international able-bodied competitions. However, his artificial lower legs, while enabling him to compete, generated claims that he has an unfair advantage over able-bodied runners.

The same year, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) amended its competition rules to ban the use of "any technical device that incorporates springs, wheels or any other element that provides a user with an advantage over another athlete not using such a device". It claimed that the amendment was not specifically aimed at Pistorius.
After monitoring his track performances and carrying out tests, scientists took the view that Pistorius enjoyed considerable advantages over athletes without prosthetic limbs. On the strength of these findings, on 14 January 2008 the IAAF ruled him ineligible for competitions conducted under its rules, including the 2008 Summer Olympics. This decision was reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 16 May 2008.

In response to the announcement, Pistorius said: "My focus throughout this appeal has been to ensure that disabled athletes be given the chance to compete and compete fairly with able-bodied athletes. I look forward to continuing my quest to qualify for the Olympics." To have a chance of representing South Africa in the individual 400-metre race, Pistorius must attain the Olympic "A"standard time of 45.55 seconds or the "B" qualifying time of 45.95 seconds if no other athlete from his country achieves the faster time. Each national athletics federation is permitted to enter three athletes in an event if the "A" standard is met, and only one athlete if the "B" standard is met. However, he is eligible for selection as a member of the relay squad without qualifying. If Pistorius succeeds, he will become the first leg amputee to participate in the Olympic Games.

His sporting motto is: "You're not disabled by the disabilities you have, you are able by the abilities you have."

See the amazing video of one of his victories on the track.

Sony has launched the HDR-TG3E, with the claim that it is the world’s smallest HD 1080 Camcorder.

With dimensions of 33 x 119 x 63.5mm and 283g, it can be slipped into your pocket effortlessly.

Sony claims that it is the smallest, slimmest, lightest camcorder to feature 1920×1080 Full HD recording with 5.1channel surround sound. It has a pure titanium body with a scratch-resistant premium hard coating.

Main features include Face Detection, ClearVid CMOS sensor, and a BIONZ image processor. Despite its small size, the TG3E has a decent sized 2.7in touch screen viewfinder. It comes with a 4GB card (about 1.5 hours recording time) and with the 16GB version can record up to 5 hours 55min of full HD films (in long play mode). It can also take stills - 4MP when in photo mode, and even 2.3MP while video recording.

The camcorder has Sony’s Intelligent Face Detection, recognising up to 8 faces in one scene, making it easier to shoot people in different situations.

Video can be easily transferred from the camcorder memory to DVD using the supplied Handycam Station, by simply pressing a single button.

Awesome Aurora Borealis

Auroras (North/South Polar Lights; or aurorae, sing.: aurora) are natural colored light displays, which are usually observed in the night sky, particularly in the polar zone. (Click to enlarge images)

The aurora typically occur in the ionosphere. Some scientists call them "polar auroras" (or "aurorae polares"). In northern latitudes, it is known as the aurora borealis (or the northern lights), named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for north wind, Boreas. It often appears as a greenish glow or sometimes a faint red, as if the sun was rising from an unusual direction. The aurora borealis is also called the northern polar lights, as it is only visible in the North sky from the Northern Hemisphere. The aurora borealis most often occurs from September to October and from March to April. The Cree call this phenomenon the Dance of the Spirits.

Its southern counterpart, the aurora australis/southern polar lights, has similar properties. Australis is the Latin word for "of the South".

Benjamin Franklin first brought attention to the "mystery of the Northern Lights." He theorized the shifting lights to a concentration of electrical charges in the polar regions intensified by the snow and other moisture.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) HIV / AIDS Information

(Contributed by: N. Kothari)

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)

Understanding the Basics
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are caused by bacteria or viruses usually transmitted by sexual activity with an infected person. With the exception of viral infections, i.e. Genital Herpes, Genital Warts, Hepatitis, and HIV infection (AIDS), most STDs can be cured.

The key to treatment is the word PROMPT, since many STDs, if not immediately treated, can go on to cause serious medical problems.

How will you know if you have an STD?

You may notice the following signs or symptoms:
For a Male
• discharge from the penis
• burning on urination
• sore(s) on or around the penis or anus

For a Female
• unusual vaginal discharge
• intense itching
• stomach cramps, but not related to menstrual cycle
• sore(s) on or around the vagina or anus

While there may be danger signs or symptoms, you can be infected without knowing it. If someone, such as your sex partner or local Health Department tells you that you have been exposed to an STD, it is very important that you get tested and treated immediately!

How you can protect yourself from STDs, including HIV:
Abstinence is the only sure way to avoid getting an STD.
Having a monogamous relationship. Sex is considered safe if both you and your partner: are not infected, have never shot drugs, and have never had sex with anyone else.

If you're not in a monogamous relationship, be sure to: always use latex condoms, limit the number of partners you have, and have regular exams.

What are STDs?
STDs are diseases that are usually passed through sexual contact with an infected partner. STDs include many diseases, such as AIDS, chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital herpes, genital warts, and syphilis. STDs are widespread; more than 12 million people in the US are infected each year.

Why should I learn about STDs?
STDs are a danger to everyone who has sex, even ONCE. Unborn children are at a risk, too!

If left untreated, STDs can have serious side effects, including:
• sterility (being unable to have a child)
• brain damage
• heart disease
• birth defects
• low birth rate
• premature Birth
• increased risk for some types of cancer
• death

How are STDs spread?

STDs are spread through contact with:
• infected body fluids, such as blood, vaginal secretions, or semen
• infected skin or mucous membranes - for example, sores in the mouth

Activities that expose you to infected body fluids or skin include:
• vaginal, anal, or oral sex WITHOUT proper use of a latex condom or other barrier methods. Anal sex is especially risky because it often causes bleeding.
• sharing needles or syringes for drug use, ear piercing, tattooing, etc.
• Having an STD may increase your risk of getting HIV. STDs can break down the body's most important defense - the skin and mucous membranes, causing sores and thus provide a way for HIV to enter the body.
Most activities don't spread STDs!

You cannot get an STD from everyday, nonsexual activities, such as:
• giving blood
• sitting next to an infected person
• sitting on toilet seats
• sharing eating utensils
• touching doorknobs
• using swimming pools

How can you avoid STDs?

There are safe alternatives to vaginal, anal, or oral sex. For example:
• Don't have sex. Abstinence is the only sure way to avoid getting an STD.
• Masturbation. Masturbation with your partner (on unbroken skin), or alone, can provide sexual pleasure safely.
• Massage. Caressing and stroking can express affection and give pleasure.
• Kissing. This can be a safe way to be physically close, as long as both partners are free of cuts and sores in the mouth.
• Fantasy. The brain is one of the most powerful sex organs. Use your imagination for satisfying sexual pleasure.

If you have sex, have sex only with one partner who:
• has no STD
• has sex with you only (monogamy)

If you are not in a monogamous relationship, be sure to:
• Use barrier methods like latex condoms. Latex condoms are your best protection from STDs during intercourse. But remember, even condoms are not 100% effective.
• Limit the number of partners you have. The more partners you have, the greater the risk of being exposed to an STD. Remember, you can't tell if someone has an STD just by looking at them.
• Have regular physical exams. Ask you physician to test for STDs if you think you've been exposed. Regular tests help find STDs early, when treatment can be most effective.
Condoms help protect both partners from STDs and unwanted pregnancy.

To use a condom properly, you'll need:
• A latex condom ("rubber"). The HIV virus and other STDs may pass through "natural" or "skin" condoms.
• A water-based lubricant. This helps keep the condom from breaking. Never use products that contain oil or fat, like petroleum jelly or cooking oil. These products weaken latex and may cause the condom to break.
• A new condom. Use one every time you have sex, even oral or anal. Discard any "new" condom that's damaged, sticky, or brittle.

To use condoms correctly:
• Put the condom on BEFORE any sexual contact.
• Leave a 1/2 inch space at the tip to collect semen. Cover the penis completely.
• Smooth out any air bubbles to reduce stress on the condom, and to increase feeling. Apply spermicide to the outside of the condom.
• Check the condom during sex to make sure it's unbroken and still on properly.
• Withdraw slowly right after climax. Hold the condom by it's base so it doesn't slip off. Dispose of properly.

To help further reduce the risk of contracting an STD:
• Don't inject drugs. Sharing needles or syringes can expose you to infected blood. Not injecting drugs is an essential part of protecting yourself from STDs.
• Avoid alcohol and other drugs. They can make you more likely to take chances when having sex.
• Don't douche. You may force germs farther into the vagina or alter the natural balance of vaginal fluids.

The symptoms of STDs may include:
• sores or blisters on or around the sex organs or mouth
• pain or burning during urination
• discharge from the penis or vagina that smells or looks unusual
• itching, swelling, or pain in or around the sex organs

Get tested right away if you think you have any symptoms, or think you've been exposed to an STD (even if have no symptoms, talk about your STD testing needs with your doctor during your health care visits). Remember, many STDs don't have any symptoms, especially in women.

Remember: If you have an STD, seek proper medical care immediately! Home remedies can make an accurate diagnosis difficult!

If you have an STD, be sure to:
• Talk to all sex partner(s) who may have been exposed. Encourage them to get tested. Both partners need to be treated to avoid reinfection.
• Avoid sexual intercourse until your physician says it's okay to resume so you don't get reinfected, or spread the disease to others.
• Follow your treatment plan and finish all medications, even if you feel well. Follow up exams can make sure treatment was effective.
• Get counseling if you're worried or upset about having an STD. Your physician or STD clinic can recommend a counselor.

What other types of birth control help protect against STDs?
Only latex condoms are considered effective protection against STDs. Birth control pills, diaphragms, sponges, and other contraceptives do not prevent STDs.

A lot of men carry condoms in their wallets. Is this a good idea?
No. Exposure to body heat, sunlight, and extreme cold can all damage condoms and make them more likely to break.

Once I've had an STD, can I get it again?
Yes. Sex without a condom can result in getting an STD, no matter what STD you've already had.

Be Informed About AIDS

What is AIDS?
AIDS (acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome) is a serious illness. The virus that causes AIDS attacks the immune system, the body's natural defense against disease. Damage to the immune system leaves the body vulnerable to secondary illnesses that can be fatal. There is still no known cure for AIDS, but effective treatments are now available. Research continues in the hope of developing better treatments and a vaccine.

Why should I learn about AIDS?
You should learn about AIDS because you may be at risk for it or you may be HIV positive, or your job may involve helping people who have AIDS. Learning about AIDS can help you understand the facts and reject the myths about the illness. Knowing about AIDS will also help you respond without fear to people who require your help.

What causes AIDS?
AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). A healthy immune system includes special kinds of white bloods cells called B cells and T cells, and depends on a balance of certain kinds of T cells. "Helper" T cells assist B cells in fighting disease. "Suppressor" T cells call off the attack when the invading disease has been stopped. HIV apparently destroys the helper cells without affecting suppressor cells proportionately. When suppressor cells outnumber helper cells, the immune system fails.

What are the effects of HIV on the body?
HIV may be in the body for many years before there are any signs of illness. As HIV weakens the immune system, signs and symptoms may appear.

People may have:
• swollen lymph glands in the neck, underarm, and groin area
• recurrent fever, including "night sweats"
• rapid weight loss for no apparent reason
• constant fatigue
• diarrhea and decreased appetite
• white spots or unusual blemishes in the mouth
• other illnesses

People infected with HIV can't fight off a number of serious illnesses without medical treatment. One common illness of this type is Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), usually a rare lung infection. Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

Scientific research also shows that HIV can damage the brain and spinal cord. Signs of damage may include memory loss, indifference, inability to make decisions, partial paralysis, loss of coordination, and other problems in controlling the body.

How is HIV transmitted?

HIV is mainly spread:
• unprotected sexual contact with an HIV-infected person
• by sharing a needle to inject drugs with an HIV-infected person
• from HIV-infected mothers to their infants before, during, and after birth (breast feeding)
• HIV may also be spread through blood products.

This is very unlikely now because:
• all donors are carefully screened
• all donors' blood and blood products are tested before being used

Current research shows that HIV is NOT spread by casual contact.

For example, it is not spread by nonsexual, everyday contact, such as:
• touching, hugging, and shaking hands
• breathing and coughing
• using toilets, telephones, drinking fountains, etc.

Anyone can get infected with HIV.

So far, most cases have occurred among:
• homosexual and bisexual men who contracted HIV through sexual activity with an infected person
• heterosexuals who contracted HIV from sexual activity with an infected person
• injection drug users who contracted HIV by sharing needles and drug "works" to inject drugs
• hemophiliacs who, years ago, contracted HIV through the use of donated blood and blood products
• children who contracted HIV from an infected mother

Amazing but True - Hanging Man

Johan Lorbeer is a German street performer. He became famous in the past few years because of his 'Still-Life' performances, which took place in the public area. His installations includes 'Proletarian Mural' and 'Tarzan', which are famous in Germany. Several of these performances feature Lorbeer in an apparently impossible position. (Click to enlarge images)

With his still-life performances, this German artist seems to defy the laws of gravity. For hours on time, he remains, as a living work of art, in physically impossible positions. Elevated or reduced to the state of a sculpture, he interacts with the bewildered and irritated audience, whose appetite for communication rises as time goes by, often culminating in the wish to touch the artist in his superhuman, angelic appearance in order to participate in his abilities.

2057 Mercedes Benz SilverFlow

The 2057 Mercedes-Benz SilverFlow is the future according to Mercedes-Benz. It was designed as part of the annual LA Auto Show Design Challenge. (Click to enlarge HQ images)

It looks like a futuristic car with a super sleek design inspired by Merc racers of yore. The designers have crafted the SilverFlow from micro-metallic particles that can be arranged by magnetic fields into pre-selected forms kept on the car's key fob. For easy storage, the entire car can melt into a puddle of metallic goop, only to be reassembled by the power of magnets when you're ready to drive again.

After the market was flooded with cheap carbon fiber from China in the early 2020s, Mercedes-Benz engineers went on the hunt for a new material that would be exclusive enough for automobiles crowned with the silver star. Inspired by the T-1000 character's liquid metal form in the classic film Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Benz engineers went about reverse engineering the technology.

Mukesh Ambani's 8000 crore house

Mukesh Ambani, his wife Nita Ambani and his three children currently live in a 22-storey Mumbai tower that the family has spent years remodeling to meet its needs. Their new home, called Antilla, which is currently being built, will be 27 storeys high and is expected to cost $2 billion (8000 crore) and will be the world's largest and most expensive home.

Architecture firms Perkins + Will and Hirsch Bedner Associates, the designers behind the Mandarin Oriental, based in Dallas and Los Angeles, respectively, were approached.

Exterior

Antilla, is based on Vaastu, an Indian tradition much like Feng Shui that is said to move energy beneficially through the building by strategically placing materials, rooms and objects.

Lobby

Nine elevators dot the lobby floor: Two are designated for parking areas, three for guest quarters, two for the Ambani family residences and two for service. The lobby opens to numerous lounges, reception areas and powder rooms. Dual stairways lead from the lobby floor down to the ballroom, which is designed in an open layout with a two-story roof.

Ballroom

The Antilla ballroom has crystal chandeliers that will take up approximately 80% of the ceiling. The silver stairways lead to a central landing, behind which two retractable doors can open to display works of art. There is also a stage for entertainment or speeches, with a projection screen behind it. A kitchen, about the same size as the ballroom itself, can service hundreds of guests.

Bathroom

Antilla has a mix of lavish features and elements that are distinctly Indian. The Gingko-leaf sink designs are a good example. Native to India, the leaves in the sinks are shaped in such a way that their stems guide water into the bowl created by the basket of the leaf.

Traditional Lounge

Ambani's home features countless lounges, offering guests a quiet escape. Chandeliers and mirrors are a common feature of these rooms, as are finely woven Indian rugs.

Modern Lounge

Each space and floor uses materials not seen anywhere else. The idea is that spaces will blend into one another, giving the impression of consistency and flow, while at the same time displaying different influences and traditions.

Entertainment Level

The Ambani's theater is a full-fledged theater, indistinguishable from a cinema. A wine room, snack bar and entertaining space, including couches and tables, fill out the room.

Health Level

The indoor/outdoor health level features a lap pool and Jacuzzi that take in views of the city skyline, as well as lounge chairs shaded by trees. Yoga and dance studios, changing rooms for men and women, gyms and a solarium with a juice bar fill out the interior space. There are plans to include an ice room in the center space, where the Ambanis could sit on a hot Mumbai day to cool off in a man-made snow flurry.

Garage

The first six floors of the residence will be dedicated to parking for the Ambani family, guests and employees. Hanging vertical gardens dot the exterior. The hydroponic plants, grown in liquid nutrient solutions instead of soil, lower the energy footprint of the home by absorbing heat and sunlight and providing shade that helps keep it cool.

Roof

The top floor features a covered, outdoor entertaining space with panoramic views of the Mumbai skyline as well as the Arabian Sea. Wwhen it's too hot, or cold, an interior space with floor-to-ceiling windows provides the same luxury.
